Darkpaw’s tail dragged lazily through the water as he sat on the bank. He watched the ripples his tail would create as the pulled it out of the water and allowed to drops to fall back and rejoin the flowing river. His paws sank into the mud and he felt it mold around them, holding him in place. He sat quietly for a few more moments before a quiet rustling sound met his ears. They perked as the tom followed the sound ever so carefully.
A water vole poked his head out, not so far upwind from where Darkpaw was sitting. The tom slowly stood, careful not to make any sound. He began inching towards the vole, ever so silently. When we has in striking distance, he launched towards the soon to be prey. He delieverd a quick bite to the base of the skull, killing it.
When he stood there with his prey in his mouth, reality struck him that he had just made a kill. Sure, he had done it before, but still. All on his own!... All on his own…. His head dropped. He was struggling to work with his separation problems. He had taken a walk out in his favourite part of the territory and playing with the water had put him in a trance, but now there was no hiding that he was alone.
Darkpaw clenched his jaw tighter around his vole before deciding he would push through. A good warrior needs to be good alone, or in a group. He buried his kill and returned to his post at the river, dipping his tail in again.

Smokepaw breathed in the cold air, shivering slightly dispite his long fur. He had decided to go for a stroll, and also bring back some fresh-kill for the Clan. Now that it was leaf-bare, prey would be quite hard to find.
His ears twitched as the young tom heard a movement nearby. He spotted a water vole underneath some dead leaves, looking hungrily at a small nut. The small rodent seemed to be unaware of his presence, so, going into a hunting crouch, Smokepaw waited silently for the creature to come out into the opening. Carefully looking around, the creature shot out abruptly, racing toward the nut. Quickly, Smokepaw pounce, landing not to far from the creature. The water vole turned around, but not in time. Smokepaw had already shot out a paw, pinning it down. With a swift bite to the neck, his catch went limp.
Burying the piece of fresh-kill, he scented the air again. Darkpaw's scent lingered in the air, and it was fresh. Looking back to where the water vole was buryed, he quickly reminded himself where it was before padding toward the cold river. Smokepaw gave himself a thorough wash before appearing out from some shrubs. "Hi, Darkpaw!" he meowed to the cat, still washing his fur now and again. He couldn't be seen with messy fur!

Darkpaw jumped slightly when he heard Smokepaw meow. “Hey” he responded, turning to face the other apprentice. “Are you hunting too? I caught a vole earlier and I was just relaxing.” Darkpaw sat back down and gave his paw a quick lick. He was so glad to no longer be alone. Try as he may, he did not think he could get used to it. The silence, he hated it. “Camp is getting to hectic for me. Everyone’s walking around as if everyone else has some big secret. You can see it in their eyes. Do you feel it?” He wrapped his dark tail around his paws and fixed his stare towards the other cat. Darkpaw was not blind and he could feel the growing tension within his clan. He was not sure what was sparking it, or if it was maybe his own imagination. That was the only thing that could have driven him away from the social area of camp. Silence was bad, but forced silence was worse.
“Actually, it’s probably not a good subject. We should go. I think I’ll just go fetch my vole.” Darkpaw stood up to leave, but didn’t move. He was waiting for the other apprentice to accompany him, or stay put. If Stormpaw was feeling what Darkpaw had sensed, he wouldn’t want to return to soon either.

Smokepaw looked up from grooming his back, and meowed, “Yeah, I came to get out of camp for a bit, and do a spot of hunting. I caught a water vole not to long ago – I buried it over there” Smokepaw flicked his tail in the direction of some trees. At Darkpaw's comment, Smokepaw's mind wandered to the camp. He knew there was a bit of tension, but apart from that he hadn't noticed anything strange – but then again, Smokepaw wasn't the most observant cat in the forest.
Stretching, Smokepaw got up. “Ok, I'll go and get that water vole” he said, scampering off into the trees. Not long after, he returned with the water vole in his jaws. The warm scent of fresh-kill made him hungry, but the Clan had to be fed first. Leaf-bare was drawing nearer, so prey would start hiding in their warm burrows until new-leaf.
Smokepaw padded over to Darkpaw, dropping the fresh-kill so that he could quickly wash his ears. "Shall we get going, then?" Smokepaw asked before picking the vole up again.

Darkpaw hung his head for a moment, thinking. Maybe it was all in his head. It was a possibility there was nothing going on. He had been on his own more and more lately, hunting and training every so often. Maybe he was developing some paranoia.
"We shall. We'll pick my vole up on the way" Darkpaw meowed in response. He began padding off in the direction that his buried vole was. He found it and dug it up quickly, picking it up in his mouth. He jerked his head as a signal to Smokepaw he was ready to return to camp.
((Sorry it's s brief! I'm getting back into it still. Stick with me))

Smokepaw looked up curiously, for once paying attention to something other than his own fur. The dark grey cat seemed worried about something, and he wondered what in StarClan was on the cat's mind. The eyes that were empty of emotion, the hung head, the way he looked like he was thinking about something. There was no doubt about it – something was worrying the cat. He hadn't noticed anything weird in the Clan except the fact that Hawkstar wasn't the sanest cat in the forest – not that there were many of them in the forest nowadays anyway.
The large tom cat padded alongside Darkpaw as he headed back towards camp, wishing for once that he really did pay more attention to his surroundings. If he could remember correctly, Darkpaw's mother had died when he was young. The medicine cat had looked after her, but in the end she didn't make it. His father was another thing entirely, and he hadn't really heard anything about him. No one really spoke about Darkpaw's history, and Smokepaw wasn't about to break that trend.
Thoughts about mothers made him think about his own parents. His face fell as he thought about them, and he wished they were still alive. If only they hadn't of gone on that hunting trip, wished Smokepaw silently. He straightened up a bit, and tried to push those thoughts away from the front of his mind, but it was obvious that he was still thinking about it.
“I haven't really noticed anything odd, but I hope whatever is wrong clears up soon. Apart from the fact that we have a loony as our leader,” Smokepaw meowed through the fur of his water vole, his voice falling to a mere whisper as he said the last words. The young cat hoped Hawkstar wasn't nearby to hear that.

Darkpaws whiskers twitched as he thought more about the Clan. It must have been just him then. There was probably nothing going on. There was no feud between the other Clans that was causing bloodshed, as far as he was aware. There was no reason to distress. I chose to take light in Smokepaws comment about their leader. "This is true" he smiled. "Hawkstar is definitely not all there" Darkpaw whispered to his Clanmate.
He took a minute to get his bearings and then looked at Smokepaw with a glint. "Race you back to camp?" he said with a grin, readying his stance for a burst of speed should his friend agree. He shook his paw, it seemed to be fine. He could at best keep up.
